Hope For The Future

For six weeks now, Josh and I have been travelling round West Bank settlements in order to write a book on life behind the Green Line. Whilst the pieces that I've written for Cif have focused on the extremists and radicals that we've encountered along the way, the vast majority of people we've come across have been anything but fanatic... Dear Seth Freedman

My name is Adam Lewitt, and I am a 20 year old Mi8ddle East history student at Birmingham University.

I am currently in Israel, staying in Jerusalem, trying to get a feel for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict first hand, instead of from the books which I have studied on the matter.

I find your Guardian Comment is Free pieces enlightening and stimulating, and I was wondering if I could possibly meet you whilst I am here? I am staying in a hostel filled with radicals who have very little sympathy with the Israeli predicament, and I would like to hear a more nuanced report from someone.

Of course, I understand that you must be very busy, so it is no trouble if you can't spare some time for an interview.

My email address is ivanthered@hotmail.com and I am staying here for the next 5 days. Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Adam Lewitt

Dear Seth,

I've been reading your articles on Cif and wanted to comment but did not want to wade through the comments there as they fill me full of sadness.

I am 22, just graduated from Warwick University, and living in England. My mother is Palestinian and my father is British. Like you I occupy a ground very much on the periphery of modern political thought re the Palestine-Isreal problem. My mother and two of her brothers previously belonged to the PLO and my uncle (Sami Ramlawi) was the equivalent of to the Minister of Finance for the PA under Arafat.

As I am sure you are aware, Sami Ramlawi is now m.i.a and a wanted man; my mother and her brothers have chosen over-priviledged ignorance over their earlier political vehemance.

I have been to Palestine although my mother and her family were forced to flee to Jordan where they now live. Whilst there I was overcome with a sense of utter helplessness. The comments on Cif sadden me more than you can imagine and as much as I would like to say it is, it is not because I feel the need to defend you (you clearly have the intellectual brawn to do that on your own). It is because they largely make explicit my fears that we have completely lost our senses. I do not understand when it happened that leftist individuals came to defend fascist nationalism, nor do I understand how it happened that liberal individuals such as my young cousin became supporters of Hamas.

It alleviates my utter despair somewhat to read your articles and I am heartened to know that there are young Jews who are as bewildered as I am, as a young Muslim, by the acts of political organisations that claim to act on their behalf. Please do keep writing. I will be stopping back often.

King regards,

Tara Chapple.

from todays guardian

"Two Israeli tank shells struck the school in Jabaliya refugee camp, spraying shrapnel on people inside and outside the building, according to news agency reports.

The medical director of the hospital in Jabaliya told the Guardian 41 bodies had been brought in so far and more could be on the way. Reuters journalists filmed bodies scattered on the ground amid pools of blood and torn shoes and clothes."
